... if given a vote, a majority of Members of Congress support a ban on horse slaughter. Please take a moment to urge your Representative to support HR503.
Throughout 2005, much of our energy was dominated by a frenzied political
battle for the future of America’s wild horses. We waged an incredible
fight alongside powerful allies, and succeeded in passing an amendment
that would protect our wild and domestic horses from slaughter for 1 fiscal
year. Unfortunately, the horse slaughter industry convinced our own USDA
to override a Congressional amendment and allow horse slaughter to continue.
With the Burns rider of 2004 still in effect, some 8200 of America’s wild
horses fall within the category of “sale authority”. This means that
they can be sold to the highest bidder. Without the protection of the anti-slaughter
amendment, our nation’s wild horses could end up on dinner plates in Europe
and Asia. Though Return to Freedom focuses on long term solutions to protect
wild horses in their natural habitat, we cannot ignore this immediate threat.
The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR 503, S 1915) is federal legislation
that will end the slaughter of horses, wild and domestic, in the United States.
We need to focus our energy on the US House of Representatives right now, where
this legislation is lingering in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
We already know based on the success of last year’s amendment that, if
given a vote, a majority of Members of Congress support a ban on horse slaughter.
We need to pressure the Committee to release this bill for a vote.
America’s wild horses have no voice other than that which
we give them. Please be a voice for them now!
Below is a list of the phone and fax numbers for all of the Members of
the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Please take a moment to urge
the Non-Cosponsors to support HR 503 and thank those that already support
it. If you can get friends and family to write letters and fax over in
batches that is all the better. Let’s keep their fax machines busy.
Remind them that Americans do not eat horses and that our wild horses are
part of our living cultural heritage – not a delicacy!
